Water Quality Concerns in San Diego

San Diego may be known for its beautiful coastline, but what’s coming out of your tap tells a different story. Many homes across the region deal with hard water, strange tastes, or concerns about potential contaminants, and not everyone realizes what’s behind it.

Whether you’re noticing spots on your dishes or just don’t trust what’s in your glass, understanding the local water challenges can help you take the right steps to protect your home and health.

1. Hard Water

San Diego's water is known for its high mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium. This "hard water" can lead to:

  • Dry, itchy skin and brittle hair
  • Soap scum buildup on dishes and fixtures
  • Reduced efficiency and lifespan of appliances

These minerals can also cause scaling in pipes, leading to potential plumbing issues over time.

2. Contaminants in Tap Water

While the city's tap water meets federal and state standards, some residents are concerned about the presence of certain contaminants. For instance, disinfection byproducts like trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are formed during the water treatment process and have been detected at levels that, while legal, exceed health guidelines recommended by some environmental groups.

3. Aging Infrastructure and Sewage Spills

San Diego's water infrastructure has faced challenges, including sewage spills that have led to beach closures and raised public health concerns. For example, the Tijuana River has been a source of cross-border pollution, with untreated sewage flows impacting local waterways and coastal areas.

Treatment Solutions to Take Control of Your Water Quality

Being informed about these issues empowers you to make decisions that protect your household. Water treatment solutions, such as whole-house filtration systems and water softeners, can address many of these concerns, providing cleaner, safer water for your daily needs.

Mx Hybrid Water Softener

Whole House Water Filtration & Salt Softening • Ultimate Scale & Chemical Controller in One

Mx water softeners are salt-based systems that help to remove chemicals and scale causing calcium, thoroughly softening water. Mx water softeners help to remove and reduce various chemicals like chlorine, pesticides, and VOCs that could be present in your water. With these chemicals removed, your water is safer to drink and healthier for your skin.

Water softeners have many great benefits, like eliminating scale buildup to increase the efficiency of your water heater, dishwasher, and all water-using appliances. You will also cut down on soap usage by two-thirds and keep your clothes cleaner and brighter.

Not Sure if You Need Water Treatment?

This quick quiz will help you figure out if a water treatment solution could make a real difference in your home.

Legal limits for contaminants in tap water have not been updated in almost 20 years. This means regulations for the water in our homes have not been updated to reflect what science now knows could be dangerous. We’re drinking, bathing, and cooking with this water.

Would you like to remove contaminants from just your drinking water or from all your water?

San Diego is known for having hard water, contaminants, and a high concentration of minerals (not always the good kind). While San Diego tap water meets legal regulations, it’s important to keep in mind that legal does not necessarily equal safe. In a recent study, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) identified 16 contaminants within San Diego drinking water that exceeded health guidelines. Many of these contaminants have potential links to serious illnesses such as cancer.

Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Advocates of alkaline water believe it can neutralize the acid in your body. Regular drinking water generally has a neutral pH of 7. Alkaline water typically has a pH of 8 or 9. Alkaline water also must contain alkaline minerals and a negative oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). ORP is the ability of water to act as a pro- or antioxidant. The more negative the ORP value, the more antioxidizing it is.

Would you like to remove contaminants from just your drinking water or from all your water?

You may have noticed stains and buildup on your faucets or shower doors; this is a clear sign of hard water. Hard water has an unusually high concentration of minerals like calcium and magnesium. When this water enters our homes, it can cause costly corrosion to plumbing.
